Mansfield Town League Two Promotion Odds: Stags move back into top three

Mansfield Town quelled the nerves around the One Call Stadium as they got their quest for automatic promotion back on track with a win against basement side Forest Green.

On the receiving end of a thumping from play-off hopefuls Crawley Town on Saturday, questions began to loiter over Mansfield's promotion credentials but they answered them impressively with a deserved win over Steve Cotterill's outfit.

The Stags are now 1/10 to finish in the top three and an even shorter price of 1/16 to secure promotion as they edge closer to a return to the third tier for the first time since 2003.

EFL League Two

Mansfield had looked set to battle Stockport County for the League Two title but after dropping points at home to Colchester United during the international break, their ambitions of finishing top were severely dented following a 2-0 defeat to Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

A home encounter with high-flying Crawley presented Nigel Clough's side with an opportunity to get back on track but they were comprehensively beaten by Scott Lindsey's outfit, who had scored all four of their goals before the hour mark.

With MK Dons keeping the pressure on behind, the onus was on Mansfield to make their games in hand count and they delivered a professional performance to dispatch Forest Green.

Tom Nichols' looping header created the breakthrough after 20 minutes and yet the Stags were unable to build on their advantage, which nearly cost them in the closing stages.

Goalkeeper Christy Pym was on hand to twice thwart Forest Green just three minutes time, firstly denying Emmanuel Osadebe's attempt before doing enough to prevent Kyle McAllister's follow-up from rippling the back of the net.

The result leaves Mansfield in third, two points clear of MK Dons, whom they play in a crunch match on Saturday.

Clough's side know they will need to avoid defeat in the fixture to distinguish MK Dons' automatic promotion hopes but Mike Williamson's team have been in fine fettle on home soil, winning seven of their last eight matches at the Stadium MK.

Mansfield do possess a game in hand on their promotion rivals, which will see them welcome Accrington Stanley to Nottinghamshire on April 16.
