Manchester United closing in on Wolves' Matheus Cunha

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha.

Cunha looks set to be United's first signing of the summer transfer window, with the Red Devils triggering the player's £62.5m release clause.

The 25-year-old has been expected to leave since an interview in March, where he told the Guardian: "I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone. Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential."

When his comments circulated on social media, Cunha responded: "Time to be happy, I will follow my dreams, not yours... So stay cool."

Fabrizio Romano has now reported on X: "Manchester United are now closing in on Matheus Cunha deal!

"The Brazilian has accepted the project as agreement on personal terms is now being finalised, almost done.

"Final details to sort between all parties involved… and then, here we go."

When asked about the move in April, manager Ruben Amorim played talks down, saying: "I will say nothing about Matheus because if I say one time, I will have to say for any situation that is yes or no, so I will not comment about that."

Cunha has taken up the mantle of Wolves talisman this season, flourishing under both Gary O'Neil and Vitor Pereira, and it's believed that Amorim was particularly impressed with Cunha's suitability in a 3-4-2-1 system, closely mirroring his own.

Cunha has scored 15 goals for Wolves this season, but the Brazilian will likely be deployed as a number 10, with United still in the market for at least one centre forward.

Liam Delap has been strongly linked to the club and is favourite to move to Old Trafford over the summer, while United remain linked to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen and Bryan Mbeumo.
