Viktor Gyokeres has been backed in from 7/2 to 8/11 to join Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
United have been in the market for a new centre forward as the club look to upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee who scored a combined seven Premier League goals last season.
Liam Delap was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but after United’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the 22-year-old opted to join Chelsea for £30m, with the move set to be confirmed in the coming days.
Arsenal were the front-runners for Gyokeres’s signature, but the Gunners appear to be moving for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, opening a path for United to sign Gyokeres. Arsenal had gone as short as 1/4 to sign Gyokeres but a deal may now be off the cards.
Gyokeres was linked with a move away from Sporting CP last summer after a remarkable debut season, particularly as reports linking Ruben Amorim with a departure from the club grew.
Amorim did leave partway through the season as the Swede went on to score an incredible 39 Primeira Liga goals en route to a second straight title.
With Gyokeres remaining at the club in January, an agreement was reached between player and club that the striker could leave for around £55m – less than his £85m release clause.
talkSPORT reported on Thursday: “Viktor Gyokeres is open to a move to Manchester United even without Champions League football.
“The Sporting striker remains a possibility for United, but any move will be dependent on outgoings and formal talks with Sporting are not yet underway.”
bet365’s Sports and Trading expert Steve Freeth said: “United were as big as 14/1 to sign Gyokeres on 23rd May with the club linked with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Liam Delap and Benjamin Sesko amongst other striker targets.
“The Arsenal links strengthened towards the end of May as a move looked increasingly likely, but all the recent money has been on the Swede reuniting with his old boss.
“After the bets we’ve taken in recent weeks, we’d love to see him start next season anywhere but Old Trafford or the Emirates!”
