Manchester City v FC Copenhagen: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Holders Manchester City continue their Champions League defence against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday and with the Citizens 3-1 up from the first leg of their round of 16 clash, the Racing Post's James Milton has offered his best three tips for the Etihad encounter.

Phil Foden was City's hero in Sunday's 3-1 Premier League win over Manchester United and the England international has also starred in this season's Champions League.

Foden's late goal gave City a 3-1 first-leg lead in their last-16 tie against Copenhagen and the Danes are 66/1 to qualify for the quarter-finals.

History is not on Copenhagen's side when they travel to the Etihad Stadium for Wednesday's second leg.

They were thrashed 5-0 by City in Manchester during last season's group stage and Pep Guardiola's men went on to hammer RB Leipzig 7-0 in the home leg of their round-of-16 tie.

City then knocked out Bayern Munich and Real Madrid before a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the final and the holders are 1/7 to seal their progress to the quarter-finals of this season's competition with a home win over Copenhagen.

James Milton's Manchester City v Copenhagen tips and predictions

Man City to Win to Nil - 4/5

Manchester City had to come from 1-0 down to beat Manchester United in Sunday's derby but Marcus Rashford's stunning early strike was one of just three attempts at goal from the Red Devils.

City won their three home knockout games in last season's Champions League by an aggregate score of 14-0 against Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, underlining the scale of the task facing Copenhagen.

Josko Gvardiol's return from injury means Guardiola has all of his senior defenders available and backing City to win to nil looks a good bet.

Before the United game they had conceded only one goal in their previous four league matches, beating Everton, Brentford and Bournemouth to nil.

They also showcased their defensive quality in a tricky FA Cup tie at Tottenham at the end of January. Spurs have scored in all 26 of their league matches under Ange Postecoglou but they were restricted to just one shot in their 1-0 cup defeat to City.

A contract dispute means Copenhagen's brilliant young forward Roony Bardghji has been short of playing time recently and Lukas Lerager, their top scorer in the Champions League, is injured.

The Danes failed to score in five of their six away group games in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 editions of the Champions League, losing four of those matches, and they may struggle to land a blow on the home defence.

Julian Alvarez First Goalscorer - 5/1

City star Erling Haaland had an eventful week, scoring five times in the FA Cup rout of Luton before a shocking miss and an injury-time goal against Manchester United.

Haaland has scored five goals in this season's Champions League but teammate Julian Alvarez has a far superior strike-rate in Europe, finding the net four times in just 155 minutes of game-time.

Given City's first-leg advantage, the World Cup winner may be in line to start against Copenhagen and he is a value alternative to Haaland in the First Goalscorer market.

Alvarez averages a healthy 2.7 shots per game in the Premier League this season, and 2.8 in the Champions League, with the Argentine bagging in last season's 5-0 win over Copenhagen.

His only Champions League start this term yielded eight shots and two goals against Crvena Zvezda at the Etihad and he can add to his impressive tally on Wednesday.

Both Teams to Receive a Card - No - 11/8

Manchester City have won all seven of their Champions League matches this season, completing group-stage doubles over Crvena Zvezda, Young Boys and RB Leipzig before the first-leg victory in Denmark.

The ease with which City have brushed aside their European opponents is reflected by a total of just five yellow cards from those seven matches.

They should not have to resort to dirty tactics against underdogs Copenhagen, so backing one or both teams not to receive a card could prove profitable.

The Citizens did not collect a single caution in the first leg and last week's games against Luton and Manchester United featured just one booking, for United centre-back Raphael Varane.
