Manchester City emerge as surprise destination for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo

Manchester City are reportedly plotting a move to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo.

Speculation concerning Gakpo's future has been a constant theme throughout the summer transfer window with Tottenham Hotspur keen to recruit the Netherlands international.

Liverpool have maintained that he's not for sale, but Man City are set to test their resolve as they look to fill the gap in Enzo Maresca's squad left by Savinho's switch to Tottenham.

According to Sky Italy's Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano, City have made contact with Liverpool over a possible deal.

Premier League

Tottenham were deemed frontrunners for Gakpo throughout the summer, but Spurs' purchase of Savinho seemingly closes the door on the 27-year-old moving to North London.

Last season was undoubtedly Gakpo’s toughest campaign with Liverpool since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023.

However, the forward has cut a rejuvenated figure in pre-season under Andoni Iraola, and that form translated into the Reds' opening Premier League fixture as Gakpo netted in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Liverpool are relucant to part with Gakpo given their current shortage of attacking options.

Iraola's options were boosted with the arrival of Victor Munoz from Osasuna, but the Spanish winger has essentially replaced Mohamed Salah and the Reds require further reinforcements.

Liverpool have pursued Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola since the World Cup, but their interest is yet to escalate. The Reds have also shown an appreciation for Barcola's precocious team-mate Ibrahim Mbaye.

If the Merseyside outfit are able to acquire two wide players, then according to Fabrizio Romano, they will sanction Gakpo's exit.

Reports from the Netherlands suggests other clubs from across Europe are also monitoring Gakpo's availability, and it will likely require a substantial offer to prise the Dutch forward from Liverpool.
