Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim tight-lipped on Matheus Cunha move

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has refused to be drawn on speculation linking the club with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian is expected to leave Molineux in the summer after a recent post on social media suggesting his long-term future would be spent elsewhere, and Manchester United are believed to be amongst the leading candidates for his signature.

Posting on X on 21st April, journalist Fabrizio Romano said: “Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing.

“Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd are aware of more clubs keen + £62.5m release clause available.

“Good feelings after initial contacts between Cunha and #MUFC.”

The Red Devils are now as short as 1/5 to sign Cunha in the summer and it is thought the former Atletico Madrid man could become the club’s first signing of the transfer window, though Amorim refused to comment on the speculation.

“I will say nothing about Matheus because if I say one time, I will have to say for any situation that is yes or no, so I will not comment about that,” said Amorim in his pre-Bournemouth press conference.

“We are focused on this season and even the way we are going to prepare the next season could change in these games, so it is hard to predict what is going to happen in the future.”

It is clear that United need to bolster their attacking options in the summer. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have combined for just six Premier League goals this term; Hojlund looks completely bereft of confidence, while Zirkzee by his own admission isn’t an out-and-out striker.

However Cunha’s best work has been done as an attacking midfielder this season and his profile looks better suited to be one of Amorim’s number 10s, meaning United would still be in the market for a centre forward, with Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko all linked.

United’s bottom-half finish means their only way back into Europe will be via winning the Europa League, which will earn them a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, but Amorim believes players will always be drawn to Old Trafford.

“It is Manchester United. What I feel is that there's a lot of players that want to play for our club,” said Amorim.

“I know that if you look at our club in the moment, it looks like, sometimes, with all the problems, with the staff, with people going, changing coach, the results, it looks a little bit of a problem in the moment but we have a clear idea and that is the easiest part to explain to a player.

“And then it is Manchester United. Everybody wants to play for Manchester United.”
