Preceded by the North American Soccer League (1968-1984), Major League Soccer was founded in 1993, with the first season taking place in 1996 with 10 teams.
Over the next 25 years, the league enjoyed steady expansion, which included the introduction of marquee players such as David Beckham and, more recently, Lionel Messi.
As of 2024, 29 compete in MLS across two Conferences (Eastern and Western), with San Diego FC set to bring the number up to 30 in 2025.
The champions of MLS are decided each season via post-season play-offs, with the top seven teams from each conference entering after the wild card round.
After three rounds, the two winners of the Conference finals meet in a one-off match to determine the MLS Cup winners.
LA Galaxy are the most successful team in MLS history with five MLS Cup wins, ahead of D.C. United on four.
