NRL: Maguire finally axed by Wests Tigers

Michael Maguire has been sacked as coach of the Wests Tigers with Brett Kimmorley landing the job on an interim basis.

Maguire has been under pressure for some time. The Tigers sit 13th on the NRL ladder and have won just three games this season. They are priced at 14/1 to make the top eight.

Results driven business

Maguire had been in the job for over three years but was unable to guide the Tigers back into finals. He survived the axe at the end of last season but another poor start to the season has led to the Tigers making the decision.

Director of Football Tim Sheens accepts the results have not been good enough and it is time for a new coach to take the helm.

"We're a results-driven business, let's face it," Sheens told reporters on Tuesday after the decision was made. “At the end of the day it's the reality of professional sport.

"My recommendation [to the board] was that if we can't say that he will be our coach in three years' time, then he shouldn't be here and now is the time to do it.

"It's one of those things that is not about results but also about the future, so we'll go to market now for a coach."

Kimmorley excited

Kimmorley will take the reins for the remainder of the season and is looking forward to making his mark.

“I get the opportunity to have a crack at coaching which I'm very excited about, and hopefully do a good job and we get some success back,” he added.
