NRL: Maguire calls for patience

Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire is calling for patience and insists things will get better despite his side slipping to yet another defeat against the Warriors on Friday night.

The Tigers are desperate to finish in the top eight and play finals for the first time in 11 years but for now they sit 0-3 following a disappointing start to the 2022 NRL campaign.

Signs of improvement

Despite the 16-12 defeat Maguire saw signs of improvement on the disastrous defeat against Newcastle last weekend.

Luke Brooks and Oliver Gildart stood out and the Tigers can think themselves unfortunate not to have scored more tries. They were also left fuming when an appeal for a try scored by Luciano Leilua was not referred to the bunker.

Maguire is changing the style of play and says there needs to be a bit of patience while they work on it.

"I said at the start of the season, we're going to change our style and we're going to have a different way of playing,” Maguire said. "And we are a team that has the ability to play like that. But then you've got to learn how to control and play with patience.

"So we're going through a period of that at the moment where I know that we'll get better with that, but we've got to stay at it. It works."

Injury worries

Meanwhile there is further bad news on the injury front with star prop forward Stefano Utoikamanu facing a spell out with a badly twisted ankle.

Maguire admitted it did not look good and he will join Adam Doueihi, Shawn Blore, Tommy Talau, AJ Kepaoa, Ken Maumalo and James Roberts on the treatment table.
