Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick stun world number one Scottie Scheffler with landslide Ryder Cup win

Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick registered a huge win over Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley, winning 5&3 during Friday's foursomes at the Ryder Cup.

Scheffler was partnered by world number three Russell Henley but they could not land a glove on their European counterparts.

Aberg and Fitzpatrick cruised to an early lead before sealing the win with a magnificent putt on the 15th hole.

Ryder Cup

Europe started fast, winning the first hole before Scheffler and Henley made a swift reply, levelling the scores on the second.

It went from good to great for the boys in blue as a half on three was followed by a hat-trick of wins on holes four, five and six. Scheffler and Henley looked stunned, and by the time they wandered to the 12th tee, they were staring down the barrel of a big defeat.

So, when Fitzpatrick drained yet another winning putt on 12, the match was all but over.

There was brief hope for the US when they won on 13 but it only served to delay the inevitable, as Europe sealed a comfortable win to put them 3-0 up.

The Scheffler-Henley axis was supposed to be one of USA's headline pairings, but Henley's lack of length off the tee was consistently exposed by the set up of the course. The evidence was there for all to see with Europe time and time again finding themselves 30 to 40 yards ahead of their opponents off the tee.

Despite his utter dominance in world golf across the last few years, the loss only worsens what is already a disappointing Ryder Cup record for a player of Scheffler's calibre.

Appearing three times in foursomes, Scheffler is still yet to pick up a win, defeated twice in 2023 before today's damning loss around Bethpage Black.

Whilst today's margin of defeat was heavy, it is still not the biggest loss that Scheffler has suffered in the format.

When partnered by Brooks Koepka, the four-time major champion was beaten 9&7 by Viktor Hovland and Aberg at Marco Simone two years ago.
