Liverpool's Federico Chiesa reportedly seeking a return to Italy

Liverpool's Federico Chiesa is reportedly seeking a return to Italy after limited game time in his first season with the Reds.

Premier League 2025/26

It was a tough first campaign in England for Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa, reportedly struggling to get up to speed with the Premier League in the early stages of the season, restricting his involvement throughout the term.

Reports suggest that the Italian is seeking a move away from the club in the summer transfer window, in search of regular game time.

Fabrizio Romano took to ‘X’ to clarify the situation.

“Federico Chiesa’s desire remains to leave Liverpool and play on regular basis next season, despite his excellent relationship with everyone at the club.

Priority remains Italy return for Chiesa as Napoli made contact to be informed.

The versatile forward featured just 14 times for the Reds in the 2024/25 season, though just six of them appearances came in the club’s Premier League winning campaign.

Signed from Juventus for a reported £10m fee, intense competition in the form of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and, of course, the record-breaking Mohamed Salah has meant that the low-risk move hasn’t quite worked out for either party.

Liverpool will likely be confident that they will be able to recuperate what they paid for the player, with reports suggesting that Napoli are keen on adding Chiesa to their forward line.

The Italian outfit have already added Premier League great Kevin De Bruyne to their Serie A winning side, and they are looking to fill the void left by the departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January.

While Chiesa’s involvement in England has been limited, he was a regular performer in Italy, scoring nine goals and assisting three times in the 2023/24 term prior to his exit.

Chiesa has not ruled out the possibility of returning to Juventus, stating: “Juventus? I still love the club. Returning there one day? Why not.

"Thiago Motta didn’t want me there. He told me that I was not part of his plans, and should go (and) find a team.”

A move away from Merseyside looks inevitable for the winger this summer, with a return to Italy looking increasingly likely.
