Liam Smith maintained his charge towards a second world title on Saturday night after overcoming the dangerous Hassan Mwakinyo amidst hugely controversial circumstances.

Referee Victor Loughlin opted to wave the contest off in the fourth round after Mwakinyo had taken a voluntary knee in his own corner for a second time within a minute.

On the first occasion it appeared the Tanzanian had lost his gumshield, although there was no clear and obvious reason behind his decision to drop to the canvas for a second time – although he had seemingly rolled his ankle a round earlier.

Speaking following the bout, ‘Beefy’ Smith was as confused as anybody else about the drama which had unfolded.

“I don’t know what happened, I really don’t – it was all very strange and disappointing really,” he told the media following the bizarre conclusion.

“I didn’t really do too much in the fight because Hassan was so wild – I’m just gutted I never gave the fans a proper finish.

“It’s all out of my hands sadly, and I know he has said he slipped, but for me, he just quit. It doesn’t take a genius to work that out.

“I said about the sparring story in the build-up to the fight so I always knew he had this sort of thing in him.”

Smith’s victory comes hot on the heels of impressive wins over Anthony Fowler and Jesse Vargas, and he feels he has now elevated himself back in contention for a crack at world honours.

“People are probably bored of me saying it, but I just want a big fight – please get me a big fight,” he added.

“I’ve been on a good run, I feel I am in really good shape and I feel as though I have earned a shot at somebody. Hopefully, we can get something sorted.”
