Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have urged Liam Delap to avoid a summer move to Manchester United amid reports linking the Ipswich Town striker with a £30m transfer to Old Trafford.
Man Utd are set to embark on a pivotal summer transfer window as they prepare to give Ruben Amorim the backing he requires to reshape the team ahead of next season.
Despite a horrid Premier League campaign which sees them languish in 16th with a measly return of 39 points from 37 matches, the Red Devils have the opportunity to salvage their season when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday.
Victory would ensure United are dining at the UEFA Champions League table next term, which is an enticing proposition for players linked with a move to the club, including Ipswich frontman Delap.
United are reportedly on the verge of completing a £62.5m deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Delap is one of several targets identified by the United hierarchy who can help the club climb back into the upper echelons of the Premier League.
The 22-year-old has a reported £30m release clause at Ipswich and he's not short of suitors with the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle United credited with an interest.
Whilst Man Utd are considered frontrunners to seal Delap's signature, Carragher explained why the Tractor Boys striker should steer clear of Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
Discussing the topic on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher said:
I don't think Delap should go to Man United.
"Look at what happened to Hojlund. You're going from a team who have been relegated to, and I know Man United are 16th but it's still Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
"With the eyes and ears, I just think it's such a big step. It's a monster.
"His next step should be Everton or a team like that, where you're going to be playing every week, you'll be the main man and you'll feel as though you're one of the best players on the team.
"Go to a club like that for the next two years and then go to a club like Man United, who will be trying to compete for the Champions League."
Liam Delap scored 12 Premier League goals in his maiden top-flight campaign for Ipswich Town.
Old Trafford has become something of a graveyard for promising young individuals of late and Neville believes Delap needs more time before embracing a challenge as big as Man Utd.
Neville echoed Carragher's view, adding: "United has been a very tough place to play over the last few years. You need to be resilient, you need to be ready.
"Hojlund came for £70m. Zirkzee came for £30m-odd. What’s going to happen with them?
"Jason Wilcox has worked with him [Delap] - also [Omar] Berrada at City - he's having a big say on this. Man United is a different animal."
