Our resident boxing Rob Tebbutt takes a closer look at this weekend's intriguing domestic featherweight showdown between Liam Davies and Kurt Walker on the undercard of Anthony Cacace v Leigh Wood.
Liam Davies and Kurt Walker square off on the Anthony Cacace v Leigh Wood undercard in a fascinating featherweight encounter.
Davies had been on a terrific run down at super-bantamweight before he was well-beaten last time out by Shabaz Masoud, and it is of no surprise that his greater experience in the paid ranks sees him a decent-sized favourite over Ireland’s ex-amateur standout Walker.
Walker does, however, possess some of the same attributes that gave Masoud so much success last November - he hast fast hands, good movement and a sharp boxing brain.
The big question mark around Walker is his experience over the longer distance. This is his first scheduled twelve rounder and he’s only been past eight rounds on one occasion.
Against Davies, a former British and European champion, Walker will have to conserve his energy or risk being ground down in the second half of the fight.
I think this is a fight where we’ll see Walker’s speed and movement prove tricky in the early rounds, but I feel Davies’ body will adapt well to the additional 4lbs of weight and I can see his size and pressure being a factor.
He was flat against Masoud and couldn’t pin the slippery Stokie down for long enough periods to be successful, so he’ll need to box at a higher pace on Saturday night.
