Leicester City have announced that they have mutually agreed to terminate Ruud van Nistelrooy's contract as first team manager.
Ruud van Nistelrooy's underwhelming stint at Leicester saw the club relegated to the Championship in the 2024/25 term, unable to get a tune out of a team that glaringly lacked the quality to play in England's top flight.
While the Foxes were the highest placed of the three promoted sides last term, finishing three points above Ipswich and 13 points higher than Southampton, they never looked close to safety, also becoming the only team to lose eight consecutive games without scoring in the top division since Sunderland managed it in the 1976/77 season.
In a club statement, Leicester announced the Dutchman's departure.
Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud’s contract with the Club as First Team Manager will terminate with immediate effect.
- Leicester City, Club Statement
"Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the Club. From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the Club’s Academy into our First Team environment.
"Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the Football Club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future."
After serving a short period as interim manager for his former club Manchester United, Van Nistelrooy no doubt would have been hoping that the next step in his managerial career was a positive one. While this hasn't proved the case, he thanked the club for the opportunity.
He said: “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the Club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the Club well for the future.”
Leicester will be hoping to bounce back to the Premier League next season, but who is set to be at the helm is currently unknown.
