Leeds United pip Burnley to Championship title on the final day

Leeds United won 2-1 away at relegated Plymouth Argyle to clinch the 2024/25 Championship title on the final day of the season.

Both Leeds and Burnley had already secured promotion to the Premier League before the final day, with both sides on 97 points and Leeds top on goal difference.

Wilfred Gnonto's goal eight minutes after half-time cancelled out Sam Byram's first-half own-goal but it appeared as though Leeds would have to settle for second place.

Elsewhere, Burnley were beating play-off chasing Millwall 2-1 and looked set to pip the Elland Road side to the Championship title.

Joel Piroe had a goal ruled out for offside with just over 15 minutes to go as Leeds pressed for a winner against a side who were already heading for League One.

As the clock ticked past the 90 minute mark, winger Manor Solomon drifted in from the left and fired an effort into the bottom left-hand corner to spark scenes of jubilation in the away end.

Within a minute, Burnley found a third against Millwall and joined Leeds in joining by registering 100 points in a Championship season.

Former defender Jon Newsome reflected on Leeds' title win on BBC Radio Leeds.

"The players will be exhausted but I think it will be a sigh of relief," said Newsome.

"It's such a long campaign, such a tough campaign. The games come thick and fast.

"There's a lot of pressure to play for this football club. That white shirt is heavy to wear at times and too heavy for some people.

"Those players know how much it means to everybody."
