Esports: LEC Summer Playoffs - Friday to Sunday matches

The LEC 2022 Summer Playoffs begin with plenty of important matches as Europe's top League of Legends teams compete for the all-important chance to qualify for LOL Worlds.

Friday's action sees Rogue in a clash with MAD Lions. The action continues with a clash between G2 Esports and Misfits Gaming on Saturday, before Fnatic and Excel close out round 1 with a clash on Sunday.

Each of these teams will have quite a way to go in this tournament if they want to have a shot at being Europe's representative at the LOL World Championship.

OddsRogue 5/6, MAD Lions 5/6

Two of the top three seeded teams in the LEC meet in the first round of the Summer 2022 playoffs. MAD Lions was able to have a very successful Summer Split as they finished second to G2 Esports but was able to finish at 12-6.

Rogue was right on the Lions heels as they finished as the third-place team as they were able to finish at 11-7 in the Split. Rogue was able to have a successful regular season against MAD Lions as they won both matches they played against each other.

They also extended their head-to-head winning streak to four straight victories over the MAD Lions for Rogue.

That speaks volume even though the MAD Lions have fared better in a playoff setting when the teams have met.

That includes last Summer when the Lions won 3-0 in the Semifinals of this event. Rogue has been very good in the single map matches, but when it comes to a best of five series, the Lions have clearly had the edge.

MAD Lions had four players make the All-Pro team and they will make the real difference here, meaning they have the clear advantage in this match.

G2 clear favourite over Misfits Gaming

OddsG2 Esports 1/6, Misfits Gaming 7/2

The match between G2 Esports and Misfits Gaming on Saturday is a big match for G2 as they hope to defend their top seed. G2 was able to top the Summer Split standings at 12-6, but they had MAD Lions right on their tail.

Misfits Gaming has a little work to do after claiming the fourth seed in these playoffs. They also had to survive in a fourth-place tiebreaker match against Fnatic. That extra match already adds a little pressure to Misfits.

These teams split their two matches in the Summer Split, as Misfits took the first match during Week 4, before G2 returned the favour in Week 8.

Both teams have faced off plenty of times in 2022, as they saw each other in Round 3 of the LEC 2022 Spring Playoffs. Misfits had no answer for G2 in that match-up as G2 cruised to a 3-0 win.
Misfits Gaming must find the right formula if they want to extend their stay in this bracket. G2 Esports has really dominated this Series history with a 19-8 advantage in their 27 meetings.

BrokenBlade has been G2's top player and he should be able to lead his team to another deep run in the LEC. G2 are the clear favourites in this match-up.

Fnatic the team to watch

What

OddsFnatic 8/13, Excel 6/5

The final match of the weekend in the LEC Summer 2022 Playoffs first round, could be a make or break for both teams involved. Excel was able to beat Team Vitality to claim the final playoff berth and will be trying to prove they belong.

Their opening opportunity comes against Fnatic who was able to claim the fifth seed. Fnatic lost a 4th-place tiebreaker match against Misfits Gaming. Both teams in this clash must be biting at the bit to prove what they have.

This isn't quite the team Fnatic was hoping to face, as Excel has had their number this season. Fnatic has lost three of the four meetings against Excel in 2022. Yet neither team has had a successful campaign in terms of the playoffs.

Fnatic holds a 13-3 advantage in their 16 total meetings in Series history. The lack of playoff stats makes this match a bit questionable.

Yet Fnatic seems to be heading in the right direction. With players such as Upset and Wunder leading the charge Fnatic might be the team to keep an eye on during these playoffs.
