Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he held talks with Jurgen Klopp over a potential switch to Liverpool before making the move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbappe scored a remarkable 28 goals and notched 14 assists in his first full season in senior football in 2016/17, capturing the attention of almost every top European side as he guided Monaco to Ligue 1 glory and a UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea were among the clubs who displayed an interest in the Frenchman during his academy days, and it was the Reds who returned to the table to try and secure Mbappe's signature after his breakthrough at Monaco.
Speaking to The Athletic, Mbappe said: "The favourite destination of my mum was Liverpool. She wanted me to go there.
"There was a moment that I was at Monaco, I had to make a decision and I was close to Liverpool because my mum was a big fan of Jurgen Klopp.
"He's an amazing manager. I met him and I have a wonderful relationship with him. I have big respect for him.
"I remember we were on the plane and he was explaining his project. I always said to him: 'You don't need to convince me. You're Jurgen Klopp, it's Liverpool, it's a great club'.
"But of course I have other things also, other projects that are also good. I wanted to go to my city in Paris. I wanted to play in my country. I didn't want to leave my country."
The forward enjoyed plenty of club and individual success at PSG upon making the switch in 2017, and he continues to break countless records for Spanish giants Real Madrid, but the 27-year-old is still without the greatest prize in club football, the UEFA Champions League trophy.
Had he have joined Klopp's Liverpool, however, he would be a European champion, with the Reds clinching their sixth UEFA Champions League honour with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the 2018/19 final.
With that said, it remains to be seen as to whether American owners Fenway Sports Group would have approved a €180m transfer at the time, with their surge in spending only occuring in more recent years.
