Kwame Poku potential next club

Peterborough United's out-of-contract star Kwame Poku is hot property with a number of clubs interested in signing the winger.

The Posh are renowned for their ability to pluck obscure lower league talent before polishing them into profitable gems and Poku is the latest prized asset to roll off their commended production line.

The 23-year-old registered 20 goal contributions in League One last term, despite missing three months of the season after undergoing surgery in a campaign where Peterborough finished 18th.

With a number of suitors, we take a look at where Poku's next chapter may take him.

Queens Park Rangers

According to reports, it is QPR who are closest to securing the signature of Kwame Poku.

Journalist Peter O'Rourke has said in a post on X: "Poku now set for a medical at QPR after they agreed a compensation fee with Peterborough."

The signing of the 23-year-old will be a huge acquisition for incoming manager Julien Stephan who is rumoured to take charge at Loftus Road ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

QPR will be hoping that they can improve on their 15th placed league finish last season and, whilst unproven at this level, Poku looks as if he could take the step up to the Championship firmly in his stride.

Birmingham City

Birmingham have been tracking Poku for over a year and the Blues are eager to reinforce their wide options ahead of a return to the Championship.

Chris Davies' side obliterated the third tier points record as they cantered to the League One title and Birmingham have ambitions to get into the Premier League as swiftly as possible.

A lifelong Bluenose, Peterborough's director of football Barry Fry believes St Andrew's is the best destination for Poku.

"In my opinion Birmingham will make him an offer others won’t be able to match," said Fry. "But his agent seems to think Birmingham won’t be challenging for promotion next season whereas I do. I’ve met the owner and he’s incredibly ambitious.”

Rangers

Following the completion of the 49ers Enterprises takeover and Russell Martin walking through the Ibrox doors as the club's new head coach, a big summer lies ahead for Rangers.

The new ownership regime have promised to enhance the current playing squad and the availability of Poku would represent shrewd business for the Gers, who are in need of reinforcing their wide options.

A move to Rangers would be bad news for Peterborough, however, as the Posh would be entitled to less compensation due to UEFA's cross-border regulations.

Sheffield United

Following the heartache of their Championship play-off final, Sheffield United will look to regroup and go again in their pursuit of promotion next term and the Blades will need to bolster their attacking armoury.

Chris Wilder's men only mustered 63 goals across the course of the 46-game season and greater creativity is required on the right flank, which Poku can provide in abundance.

The Ghanaian has been tipped as a future Premier League star and Sheffield United certainly have aspirations of heading back to the top-flight.

Celtic

Rangers are not the only Scottish Premiership side credited with an interest in Poku as their Old Firm rivals Celtic have also been monitoring his situation.

Celtic walked to the league title last term and impressed in their European forays. Although their position in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League is not yet secured, it's highly likely Brendan Rodgers' men will reach that stage of the competition and the opportunity to feature in Europe's premier club competition will be an enticing factor for Poku, who is certainly not short of options.

Sunderland

The jump from League One to the Premier League is a substantial one and yet Poku links to Sunderland persist as the Black Cats prepare for life back in the top-flight.

Sunderland's recruitment drive has been aimed at identifying prodigious talents with vast potential and they're unlikely to deviate from the strategy that's enabled them to win promotion.

Poku certainly fits their criteria and his affordability may be too good an opportunity to turn down.
