Katie Boulter's WTA San Diego Odds: British number one 6/1 for California title triumph

British number one Katie Boulter is 6/1 to win the WTA San Diego after progressing to her first ever WTA 500 semi-final with a 6-4 6-3 win against Donna Vekic.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a terrific campaign in San Diego this week, having already taken down Lesia Tsurenko and second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first two rounds.

Boulter will now lock horns with third seed Emma Navarro in the semi-finals with the American rated 4/1 to lift the trophy.

Home talent Jessica Pegula is the 4/7 favourite to come out on top in San Diego and she faces 11/2 outright shot Marta Kostyuk in the other semi-final.

Boulter demonstrates fighting spirit in comeback wins

Boulter's season has taken a little time to get going.

She began the year by making the round of 32 in the Adelaide International before a second round exit at the Australian Open, losing in straight sets to Qinwen Zheng.

Most recently she reached the last 16 of the Linz Open but it is in San Diego where she has really risen to the occasion.

Boulter barely broke a sweat in her 6-3 6-1 thrashing of Tsurenko and in her subsequent two matches at the WTA 500 tournament, she has demonstrated excellent tenacity and fighting spirit.

In the last 16 against Brazilian Haddad Maia, Boulter had lost 11 points in a row before recovering to win 3-6 6-3 6-4.

And against Croatian Vekic last time out, Boulter was 3-1 down in the first set and won nine of her subsequent 10 games to progress to the semi-finals.

Vekic had broken first in the opening set but made too many errors in her service game, allowing Boulter back in.

And it was a pair of stunning backhands which helped Boulter to break herself at the start of the second set as she went on to win the match in one hour and 36 minutes.

Falling behind is not ideal, of course, but Boulter has shown that setbacks do not faze her and she will be eager to prove a point against Navarro in the next round.

American ace Navarro awaits Boulter in final four

One of the most intriguing players on the WTA tour this season, 22-year-old Navarro will not be an easy opponent for Boulter in the semi-finals of the WTA San Diego.

After making the semi-finals of the ASB Classic at the start of the year, Navarro claimed her first trophy in the form of the Hobart International Down Under.

A run to the third round of the Australian Open followed before a dip in form during the Middle East swing but back on home turf, she looks like a danger in San Diego.

She has won both of her matches at the event comfortably, taking down Katerina Siniakova and Daria Saville, dropping just one set in the process, although she is yet to be properly tested.

And Boulter will be eager to capitalise on any potential complacency from her American counterpart, who is still in the infancy of her career on the WTA Tour.

British number one set to rise up the ranks after San Diego success

Whatever happens in her semi-final with Navarro, Boulter can leave the WTA San Diego with her head held high.

Not only does it represent her first ever appearance in the last four of a WTA 500 event, but it also means she is set to achieve a career-high ranking, putting her on the cusp of the top 40.

British number one Boulter came into the tournament 49th in the WTA world rankings but continues to climb and she will be looking to add to the one WTA 250 title she picked up at the Nottingham Open on grass last year.

On that occasion, Boulter beat compatriot Jodie Burrage 6-3 6-3 in the final and she is now just two wins away from another trophy.

Conditions have been tricky in California this week but Boulter has coped well with the high winds and her tournament success represents a major step forward in her career.
