Judd Trump v Mark Williams: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Mark Williams produced a magnificent final-frame clearance to down Tom Ford 10-9 in the first-round of the Tour Championship and the Welshman’s reward is a quarter-final showdown with Judd Trump.

The Ace is the top seed at Manchester Central and the Bristol cueman is looking to win his sixth major title of the campaign.

Judd Trump v Mark Williams betting tips and predictions

Mark Williams +3.5 frames - 6/5

The first-round of the Tour Championship served up no end of drama and Williams’ opening contest against Ford was the most thrilling of them all.

The Welshman had opened up a 4-1 lead and looked on course for a comfortable first-round victory. However, a series of big breaks saw Ford close the gap. The Leicester potter made knocks 114, 133, 136 and 138, in a stunning display of power scoring, and Ford was able to level the contest at 9-9.

Williams held his nerve to compile a match-winning run of 66 in the final frame and win the match, but that does the quality of the break no justice at all.

The Cwm cueman made a series of incredible pots, under the utmost pressure, to secure a dramatic 10-9 victory over Ford.

Consistency has been lost from Williams’ game, but the Welsh Potting Machine is still capable of some top-level performances in big events and it would be unwise to rule out the three-time world champion when he takes on Trump in round two.

It has been a quiet period for the 49-year-old, but Williams did lift the British Open crown earlier in the campaign and reaching the last-eight of the UK Championship certainly wasn’t a bad effort.

Clearly, those achievements don’t match with what Trump has produced this term and the Ace is going for a sixth title of the season. However, a long-format contest in a major event is exactly what brings the best out of Williams and that’s evident in the Welshman’s recent record against Trump.

The Welsh Potting Machine beat the Bristol Potter 6-2 in the Macau Masters at the end of last year and the three-time world champion took eight frames off Trump in the final of last season’s Masters.

The pair clashed in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championship and that was an incredible match that finished 17-16 to the Ace.

It’s the best-of-19-frames in Manchester on Thursday afternoon and Williams looks a good bet getting a 3.5-rack start from Trump.

Mark Williams to beat Judd Trump - 10/3

At 10/3 it could also play to have wager on Williams to win this Tour Championship quarter-final.

Clearly, Trump boasts an outstanding record this season, but the bulk of his victories have come in tournaments played over a short-frame format and a last-eight showdown in Manchester is a world away from a best-of-seven or best-of-nine-frame contest.

Trump and Williams met at this stage of the 2019 Tour Championship and the Ace won the match 9-8. The Bristol potter was a 17-16 winner in the semi-final of the 2022 World Championship, the 34-year-old triumphed 10-8 in the final of last year’s Masters, and while Trump has won all of those matches, it’s clear that Williams can match the the level of the Ace in multi-session long-format matches.

There are no worries of Williams struggling to get over the line against Trump, given the Welsh Potting Machine beat the Bristol potter 6-2 in December’s Macau Masters and there was enough in the Cwm cueman’s performance against Ford to suggest his game is in good shape.

Trump is rightly favourite for this last-eight Tour Championship showdown, but perhaps offers of 10/3 underrate the chances of Williams trumping the Ace.
