Jos Buttler resigns as England's white-ball captain

Following their early elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy at the hands of Afghanistan, England captain Jos Buttler has announced his resignation.

Despite his phenomenal record as a batter throughout his England career, Buttler's record as a captain in the white-ball format has been decidedly mixed.

Taking the reins from Eoin Morgan, Buttler failed to win any of his first four series as skipper at home to India and South Africa across the 20-over and 50-over formats, but did lead England to a 2-0 win in Australia in a three-match T20 series.

The Three Lions won the T20 World Cup in 2022, but even that came after a shock defeat to Ireland in the group stage. England surrendered their T20 crown two years later after falling to a limp semi-final defeat to India, a year after a poor showing at the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

England lost to New Zealand, India and Australia and fell to shock defeats to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, only beating Bangladesh prior to their elimination, following which they beat the Netherlands and Pakistan in dead rubbers.

More recently, England have been whitewashed in a three-match ODI series against India on the back of a 4-1 T20 defeat to the 20-over world champions, suffering another embarrassing defeat to Afghanistan to end their ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a game to spare.

The defeat prompted questions as to whether Buttler would step down with the 34-year-old admitting it was a possibility, having lost 22 of 34 ODIs since replacing Morgan, and having had time to think it over, Buttler has indeed decided to announce his resignation.

Speaking to the media ahead of his final game as captain against South Africa, Buttler said: "It's the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. This tournament was going to be important results-wise for my captaincy. Obviously two losses with a bit of a hangover from some tournaments before... [I've] probably reached the end of the road.

"It just feels like it's the right time for me and the team to have a change."
