Boxing: Johnny Nelson looks at the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr v Liam Williams

The main event on Saturday night sees Chris Eubank Jr take on Liam Williams, but don’t overlook the undercard.

We’ll see Harlem Eubank, there’ll be Claressa Shields fighting on British soil for the first time, Otto Wallin looking to secure a big heavyweight fight and plenty more.

Otto Wallin v Kamil Sokolowski

Otto Wallin previously beat Dominic Breazeale – who was stopped by Anthony Joshua in his first world title attempt. He lost to Tyson Fury in one of his comeback fights, and some say he is a step above Sokolowski so this is probably a night to see where he stands; he’s rated around 10 in the heavyweight rankings.

It’s a decent fight, a decent opportunity for us to see what he’s about and he could be a potential opponent for British fighters here as well.

Would he be a gatekeeper or does he get to a certain level, and when he gets to that level is he found wanting? Either way it’s a good fight to have on the bill just to see him up close and personal and you never know, he could be in against one or two British heavyweights who haven’t officially signed with BOXXER yet.

Chris Jenkins v Julius Indongo

Chris Jenkins from Wales, against Julius Indongo of Namibia – a good fight.

Indongo if people remember, came and beat Ricky Burns, taking his world title. He’s a southpaw and a big banger.

These two had a bit of a reputation back in the day, so it should be an exciting fight. They are past their best, but they’ll put on a hell of a fight. The winner won’t expect a crack at a world title, but they’ll still expect a fruitful existence in boxing. This is one for the purists, but it will be a good fight.

Claressa Shields v Emma Kozin

This is a great opportunity for the public on this side of the world to see Claressa Shields in the flesh. The WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight champion, touted to be the best female fighter in the world.

This is a chance to showcase her skills, and to see if our own Savannah Marshall is indeed top dog – Marshall beat her in the amateurs and she’ll always stand by that, while Shields is trying to dismiss that as though it was a different world and a different Claressa.

She’s had 11 fights and only knocked out two but she can fight, whereas Marshall is a silent assassin. So let’s see how Shields goes on this Saturday against Emma Kozin.

Kozin has had more fights and only lost one, so we’ll see how much of a challenge she can give, but you’ve got to remember there’s big gulfs in class between top class and average class in women’s boxing at the moment, but Kozin deserves that spot. I expect Shields to get the win and put on a bit of a showcase, but never be surprised in boxing…

Harlem Eubank v TBC

I was fortunate enough to do an interview with Harlem Eubank and what a nice young man. Asked him if he has any rivals or any targets – domestically at least – and he says he’s going to take it one step at a time and listen to his trainers.

He’s very honoured to be on the undercard of cousin Chris, it’s a ‘dream come true’ he says, but his ultimate goal is to be a world champion and carry on the Eubank name.

It’s very awkward for him training with Adam Booth, with Booth training Liam Williams at the moment, but he says he simply doesn’t train at the same time and tends to his own business.
