Heavyweight boxing never ceases to surprise us.

Twelve months ago, Joe Joyce was the division’s immovable object and unstoppable force. The 2016 Olympic Silver Medallist was preparing to face China’s Zhilei Zhang in a bout deemed dangerous but nothing that the Brit couldn’t eventually walk through and prevail.

How wrong we were! Not once, but twice after Zhang effectively punched the career of Joyce to the edge of oblivion.

Fast forward to the present day and Joyce is now readying himself for his next contest against Rotherham’s Kash Ali. Last time out Ali was soundly beaten on points in Edinburgh over six rounds against the unheralded Ukrainian novice Bohdan Myronets.

Joyce v Ali is an unexpected matchup and should be a foregone conclusion, but who are we to judge after what we have witnessed in the heavyweight division over the last year.

It’s Joyce, it’s (Kash) Ali... it's time to look at the 'Tale of the Tape'...

Picking Joe Joyce’s strengths and weaknesses these days isn’t the same as it once was.

His chin, his engine and power were all taken for granted having beaten Daniel Dubois, a veteran Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker. Ironically, on paper, the wins over Dubois and Parker now look better than ever but Joyce isn’t what he was in 2020 and 2022.

The likeable big man possesses vulnerabilities that were brutally brought to everyone’s attention by Zhilei Zhang during their two fights within the space of five months in 2023.

Their April encounter was one-sided prior to its sixth-round stoppage and the rematch left your jaw on the floor just like Joyce was after being knocked out in the third round.

Joyce still believes he can get himself back in the mix amongst the heavyweight division’s top tier, but a fighter is the last person to believe in himself despite the nodding heads around them.

If Joyce cannot beat Kash Ali, if he cannot knock Ali out then retirement should be at the forefront of his mind. A loss would be the shock of 2024 and bring the curtain down on an entertaining professional career. A win will do little to convince doubters.

Currently the only ranking Joyce has with any of the four sanctioning bodies is number 12 with the WBC - a dramatic fall having been one win away from being the WBO mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk’s title before his rematch against Zhang.

Having lost to Bohdan Myronets last summer, the career of Kash Ali was in no man’s land.

Ali, who was once disqualified for biting David Price during their own fight in 2019, showed his unpredictability against Myronets in a fight that would have been marked as ‘stay busy’.

On the night, Ali looked disinterested and despite being roared on ringside by his friends, including Kell Brook, the writing was on the wall from early on against a man who simply wanted it more.

Such is boxing, we should always expect the unexpected and somehow having lost to Myronets he now finds himself with the opportunity of a lifetime.

A chance to not only end the career of Joyce but to catapult himself into huge domestic fights and life improving paydays.

To do so he not only must turn up 100 percent in every single department; physically, mentally and with his qualities on song but he must hope that Joyce is there for the taking and a complete shell of the man who lost to Zhang.
