Japanese Grand Prix Tips, Predictions & Odds

Max Verstappen saw his hopes of a 10th consecutive grand prix victory literally go up in smoke courtesy of a brake fire in Australia last time, but the three-time world champion is a warm favourite to get back on the winning trail in this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.

The event has switched from its usual autumn calendar slot, but typically dreary weather is expected at Suzuka with a chance of showers, particularly on race day.

Ferrari arrive on a high following their 1-2 finish in Melbourne, where Carlos Sainz kept the mantle of being the only non-Red Bull driver to win a race in the last two seasons.

But the Scuderia have their work cut out following that up at a circuit that suits the Red Bulls particularly well.

Charles Leclerc fastest lap - 5/1
Both Aston Martins points finish - 11/8

Setting the scene…

With its fast flowing corners and unique figure-eight layout, Suzuka is one of Formula 1's classic circuits and a favourite among the drivers.

Verstappen has dominated the race for the last two years, his Red Bull being particularly well suited to the aerodynamic challenge that the circuit provides.

Sergio Perez top 2 finish - 13/8

It is a rare weekend when Red Bull fail to dial their car into a circuit straight away, but that is what occurred in Melbourne last time.

Verstappen took pole position and led away from the start, but his right rear brake was stuck on from the outset and led to an early retirement.

That ended a run of nine straight wins for the Dutchman, but it was telling that his team-mate Sergio Perez also struggled in the race.

Having followed Verstappen home in second in the first two races of the year, albeit from a respectful distance, it was a disappointing outing for the Mexican. He finished fifth, behind the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Red Bull, as well as Ferrari and Aston Martin, are bringing their first major revisions of the season to Suzuka and normal service is likely to be resumed with Ferrari able to keep Red Bull on their toes without laying down a serious challenge, so Perez looks an attractive price in the top-two finish market.

Charles Leclerc fastest lap - 5/1

Race pace was the area that Ferrari most needed to improve from last year and they certainly seem to have achieved that.

There has been a Ferrari on the front row at all three races so far this term. Qualifying speed is nothing unusual from the red cars, but they have been delivering consistently in the races, too, with four podiums collected already despite Sainz missing the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix with appendicitis.

Charles Leclerc is trending in the right direction with form figures of 4-3-2 for the season, and the Monegasque ace has collected the bonus point for the fastest lap of the race at the last two grands prix.

Leclerc sits four points behind Verstappen in the nascent championship table, and Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur ordered an upgrade planned for Imola to be rushed through in order to keep the pressure on Red Bull.

Every point is precious at this stage of the season, and you can expect Leclerc's strategy to be geared towards an attempt at the fastest lap.

Both Aston Martin points finish - 11/8

Aston Martin have not matched last year's stellar start to the season, but Fernando Alonso continues to prove he has plenty more miles on the clock.

The Spanish veteran of 380 F1 starts crossed the line sixth at Albert Park and although a penalty for his part in George Russell's race-ending crash dropped him to eighth, Alonso has comfortably finished in the points at each race this season.

The midfield is usually the most competitive area of the F1 grid, but this year there seems a big gap between the top five teams and the chasers, making points even harder to come by for the lower-half outfits.

Lance Stroll inherited sixth place in Australia and the second Aston Martin driver should be easily capable of picking up points in Japan. His task could be made simpler by the fact that rivals Mercedes have really struggled in high-speed corners, of which there are several at Suzuka.
