bet365's boxing expert Rob Tebbutt looks ahead to Mike Tyson's professional in-ring return against Jake Paul in the early hours of Saturday morning and explains where he feels the betting value can be found.
Jake Paul faces Mike Tyson in Texas in the early hours of Saturday morning in a bout that has raised eyebrows across the sporting world.
Social media star Paul has made a career out of controversy, and this weekend will be no different as he steps into the ring with 58-year-old boxing legend Tyson, whose last professional contest ended in a shock TKO loss to Irishman Kevin McBride back in June 2005.
While Tyson is, of course, the more experienced fighter, the fact remains he is approaching sixty-years-old and is far, far from his athletic prime.
If this bout was contested in Tyson’s prime (or close to it) it would be considered a public execution. However, it isn’t anywhere close to Tyson’s prime, despite what the carefully edited promo clips would have you believe.
Jake Paul is 27-years-old and, while not the most skilled boxer in the world by any stretch, is very much in his athletic prime and possesses enough punching power to knock out an ageing, inactive ex-fighter in Tyson.
You only have to go back and look at Evander Holyfield’s sad first round stoppage loss to Vitor Belfort in September 2021, in which he was floundering on the canvas after the first meaningful punch landed, to see that this has the potential to be a rough night for ‘Iron’ Mike.
Yes, the fight will be eight two minute rounds and the fighters will be wearing 14oz gloves, but I don’t expect that to be enough to prevent Tyson from a suffering a humiliating stoppage loss.
Our only hope as a sport is that there are no lasting effects.
