Jadon Sancho is set to return to Manchester United following the expiry of his one-year loan deal at Chelsea.
Despite agreeing a loan deal with a reported £25m obligation to buy clause, Jadon Sancho is set to return to Manchester United when his contract ends at Chelsea on 30th June.
David Ornstein, of The Athletic, broke the news via his ‘X’ platform.
Jadon Sancho (is) leaving Chelsea when (his) contract ends on June 30th after agreement could not be reached over personal terms for loan to turn permanent. Chelsea will pay £5m penalty to Manchester United.
It's rare that an obligatory agreement is breached, though Chelsea are expected to delve into the market to further bolster their attack this summer, with Sancho seemingly not integral to Enzo Maresca's plans.
Already possessing the likes of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto, the club are set to introduce Liam Delap and are reported admirers of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.
That’s without mentioning the abundance of talent at their disposal within the youth system.
The question undoubtedly playing on people’s minds – what’s next for Jadon Sancho?
With Manchester United having already confirmed the acquisition of Matheus Cunha, closing in on the signing of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and home to the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo, it appears unlikely that the 25-year-old will stay.
Traditionally a winger, it’s hard to imagine where Sancho would fit into Ruben Amorim’s side if he was to remain at Old Trafford, with the Portuguese manager opting for a 3-4-2-1 system that consists of two ‘10s’ behind the centre forward.
Ornstein further indicated that Sancho is “to explore options in England/Europe for (his) next move,” highlighting his desire to play at the top level.
While Chelsea have decided against making the winger’s stay permanent, it’s not necessarily been a disappointing term for Sancho.
He has registered 15 goal contributions in all competitions, securing top four with the club and winning the Conference League along the way.
