Nicolas Jackson will miss the remainder of the season after being sent off for an elbow on Sven Botman.
The suspension comes as part of a double blow to Chelsea's UEFA Champions League hopes as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle.
Newcastle didn't waste too much time taking the lead on Sunday with Sandro Tonali giving the hosts the advantage after less than two minutes.
Jackson had made just seven touches before his elbow made contact with Sven Botman's chin with 10 minutes to play in the first-half.
John Brooks initially administered a yellow card to the Senegalese forward but after being instructed to take a look at the monitor by VAR, the referee deemed it worthy of a red.
The Premier League's official Match Centre account on social media explained the process that led to Jackson's dismissal:
"VAR checked the referee's call of yellow card to Jackson - and deemed that the challenge by Jackson on Botman was a serious foul play offence, therefore recommended an on-field review.
"The referee then upgraded the yellow to a red card."
Chelsea initially responded well after going down to 10-men but the deficit did take its toll when Bruno Guimarães doubled Newcastle's advantage.
Victory has given a huge boost to Eddie Howe's sides UEFA Champions League prospects.
They now hold a three-point cushion over both Chelsea and Aston Villa with the win moving them above Manchester City and into third.
Suspension will only apply to Premier League games meaning that Jackson will be available for Chelsea's upcoming UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis.
With bans for 'serious foul play' ordinarily set at three games, it means that the Blues will be without their first-choice striker for next Friday's crucial trip to Old Trafford.
Chelsea will then have to do without him for their clash with fellow top five chasers Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season.
