Sam Johnstone Injury: Jack Butland cut from 20/1 to 5/1 to make Euros squad

Following reports that Sam Johnstone could miss the rest of the season through injury, Jack Butland has been cut from 20/1 to 5/1 to be on the plane to Germany.

bet365's Steve Freeth said: "It's been a busy 24 hours on the third-choice goalkeeper front! James Trafford shortened after the news broke of his inclusion with Jack Butland's price easing to 20/1 having been 50/1 at the beginning of February.

"Early reports of Sam Johnstone being out for the season then had punters backing a number of keepers on the periphery of the squad with Butland chopped back into 5/1!"

James Trafford was called up from the U21 squad following Johnstone's withdrawal, and the Burnley keeper is now a 4/1 shot to be included in Gareth Southgate's Euros squad despite an underwhelming debut season in the Premier League.

Although Jordan Pickford's presence has limited Johnstone to four England caps, the Crystal Palace stopper has enjoyed a solid campaign at Selhurst Park with six clean sheets and is a regular member of England squads.

It leaves Southgate with something of a headache. While Pickford is set to be picked for the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia, his number two Aaron Ramsdale might not play another game at club level for the rest of the season; Nick Pope when he eventually does return will have missed half the season through injury; Trafford hasn't yet shown he's of international standard and Johnstone may be out for the rest of the campaign.

It could potentially reopen the door for Butland, who was as big as 50/1 in February, to add to his nine England caps. The Rangers man became a fixture in England squads for a number of years while enjoying the best spell of his career at Stoke but hasn't had a look-in since 2018.

What Butland does have going for him though is regular game time. By the end of the season, he may be the only keeper aside from Pickford playing regularly at club level, though the level of competition will certainly be a stumbling block.
