After fighting six times in less than two years, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has only been in the Octagon once in the last 14 months, but finally has a date set for his next title defence.
The Dagestani fighter looked the natural successor to Khabib Nurmagomedov's throne in more ways than one. Aside from utilising the same combat sambo style of his fellow countryman, Makhachev even trained with Nurmagomedov, and once The Eagle hung up the gloves, it always felt a matter of time before Makhachev filled the void.
Charles Oliveira claimed the vacant title, but in missing weight for his fight with Dustin Poirier, he was forced to vacate the title, with Makhachev then beating Oliveira five months later.
Makhachev's only defences so far have come a natural featherweight in Alexander Volkanovski, though the 32-year-old did win both.
As announced by Dana White in the aftermath of UFC 300, Islam Makhachev's next fight will be against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 for the lightweight title.
The winner of Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan was expected to receive the next shot, but Diamond will receive a third crack at the UFC title.
Islam Makhachev will fight on 1st June 2024 against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302, as confirmed by Dana White after UFC 300.
