Ipswich Town relegated from the Premier League after loss to Newcastle

Ipswich Town’s relegation from the Premier League has been confirmed following their 3-0 defeat away at Newcastle United.

The Tractor Boys suffered a heavy defeat at St James' Park to confirm their immediate return to the second tier, with Kieran McKenna's men only managing one win in the league in 2025 so far.

Ipswich ended a four-year stint in League One after the appointment of McKenna, whose style of football was a breath of fresh air at Portman Road.

McKenna made the necessary tactical tweaks to secure back-to-back promotions, but it was perhaps too much too fast with the side heading back down to the Championship.

Ipswich spent the better part of £150m in their bid to stay up, albeit mostly on Championship players. Sammie Szmodics was unable to replicate his goalscoring form from the second tier, while the likes of Jadon Philogene, Jacob Greaves, Omari Hutchinson and Jack Clarke had little-to-no Premier League experience.

Liam Delap has been the one bright spot in a disappointing season for Ipswich, though he’ll be on the move in the summer and will remain in the Premier League.

Having failed to win any of their first 10 games, Town have spent most of the season in the bottom three and have never really looked like getting out of it.

The struggles of Wolves and Everton were offset by managerial changes, and having won just one of their last 15 games, Ipswich’s relegation has been confirmed with four games to spare.
