IPL Records: Most runs in a season

Players that score the most runs in an Indian Premier League season are awarded the distinguished Orange Cap and several of the world's elite batters have claimed the gong since it was inducted in 2008.

We've compiled a list of the players who have scored the most runs in a single IPL campaign.

Virat Kohli - 973

The face of the Indian Premier League, Virat Kohli produced a formidable campaign in 2016 as he tallied 973 runs at an astonishing average of 81.08.

Despite his ridiculous numbers, Kohli was still unable to guide Royal Challengers Bengaluru to glory that year as they were outgunned in the final by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kohli features twice on the top five list for runs scored in a season after amassing 741 in 2024.

Shubman Gill - 890

Shubman Gill demonstrated in 2023 why he's considered one of the world's elite batters as he accumulated a mammoth 890 runs for the Gujarat Titans.

The explosive India batter compiled three centuries, including a huge score of 129 against the Mumbai Indians.

Jos Buttler - 863

England white-ball star Jos Buttler has enjoyed a stellar IPL career and his 2022 campaign for the Rajasthan Royals was the pick of many productive seasons.

Buttler tallied 863 runs from 17 matches and equalled Kohli's record of centuries in a season with four, while his tally of 45 sixes has only been bettered by Chris Gayle.
