IPL 2024: Will it be a sixth success for Chennai Super Kings or Mumbai Indians?

Six of the last seven Indian Premier League campaigns have gone the way of either Chennai Super Kings or Mumbai Indians with both teams level on five titles - but could a sixth beckon for either team in 2024?

Chennai and Mumbai are the two most successful teams in the history of the franchise competition and it was the Super Kings who came out on top last year, defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final.

But both outfits again look strong in all departments as the new season approaches, so what are their respective chances of landing a record-breaking title?

Defending champions Chennai bring in reinforcements

Chennai Super Kings did not top the league table in the IPL last season, having finished second to Gujarat Titans, but they hit top gear when it mattered in the playoffs.

Their five-wicket win by DLS method in last season's final against the Titans drew them level with Mumbai on five titles and they will be eager to become the competition's single most successful team in 2024.

They certainly did not hold back in the IPL auction with their most impressive capture having been the signing of all-rounder Rachin Ravindra.

New Zealand ace Ravindra scored 578 runs for his country in last year's ODI World Cup and is a valuable addition with bat and ball.

But the Super Kings did not stop there with Mustafizur Rahman, Shardul Thakur and Daryl Mitchell having also been drafted in.

They will link up with what was already a stellar squad and Chennai are obvious contenders for the title again.

Especially key to their success last season were the performances of their openers.

Devon Conway's total of 672 IPL runs in 2023 was bettered only by Shubman Gill and Faf du Pless and he was a big game player, contributing 47 in the final.

Conway formed a devastating partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order and the pair should again impress this season.

Mumbai looking to sparkle under new captaincy

Mumbai have made a big change ahead of the 2024 campaign with Hardik Pandya returning to the team after a stint with Gujarat Titans and the often explosive all-rounder will replace Rohit Sharma as captain.

The decision is likely a nod to the future but should allow Sharma to play with more freedom at the top of the order.

Mumbai Indians have lacked confidence in the last couple of the seasons but they still managed to make the playoffs last year and finished third overall.

They possess a dangerous and varied bowling attack with leg-spinner Piyush Chawla fresh from taking 22 wickets last season and Jasprit Bumrah arguably the most consistent bowler on the planet.

Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, has looked good in the T20 format recently and Mumbai could well go a step further than they did last term.

Depth could be key for Super Kings

It is hard to split these two sides in the outright betting for the 2024 Indian Premier League with both priced at 5/1 to go the distance.

But with all things considered, Chennai Super Kings could offer the better value.

The Indians are blessed with quality bowling options and can lean on the experience of Sharma and Pandya, but Chennai's plethora of all-rounders could be vital.

The IPL is all about coping with absences and unexpected circumstances and the Super Kings have the depth to do just that.

Ravindra is a terrific all-rounder to have in their ranks, while Moeen Ali, Mitchell Santner and Ravindra Jadeja can all have their moments with bat and ball.

They are also great spin options who can capitalise on the typically spin-friendly pitch at the Chidambaram Stadium.

And while Conway and Gaikwad are a great base to build on, Mitchell and Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a 19-ball fifty on his IPL debut, both bring experience and stability to the middle-order.

In terms of who could spoil the party for Mumbai and Chennai, Gujarat Titans are next in the betting at 6/1, having won the competition in their inaugural season in 2022 before making the final last year.

Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, were third in the standings last year with eight wins from 14 matches and are 15/2, while Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore are 15/2 to win their maiden IPL title in 2024.
