Icons Series Golf: Dates, players, teams, format

Icons Series is set to see professional athletes from numerous sports compete on the golf course.

While golf seems to be the chosen second sport for so many athletes, taken up as a hobby alongside or after their playing career, we'll get to see how good many of them really are.

In 2022, we saw Team USA, featuring the likes of Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Phelps take on the Rest of the World, with the team including the likes of Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Ash Barty, Canelo Alvarez and Harry Kane.

Icons Series players and teams

A number of global stars will be taking part in the Icons Series, with football up first as Lee Westwood's Team England take on Sergio Garcia's Team World.

The likes of Jimmy Bullard, Robbie Fowler and Paul Scholes will tee it up for Team England, while Team World features an all-star cast including Gabriel Batistuta, Luis Figo, David Ginola and Gianfranco Zola.

Icons Series format

For the Reignwood Icons of Football, there will be four sessions of play, all in a matchplay format and all over 10 holes instead of the usual 18.

Day one will be fourballs followed by greensomes. Day two will be another session of greensomes before the singles session.

Slight differences to the usual matchplay format will see each team have a home and away hole, with the away team able to take two points if they win that hole. The 10th and final hole will also be worth two points.

The greensomes is a variation on the more common foursomes, whereby all four players will tee off, with the best tee shot selected by each team, and the team playing alternate shot with the one ball from there.

There will also be a running tally of 'crocs' and 'camels', better known as water hazards and bunkers. The players with the highest number of entries to 'crocs' and 'camels' will incur penalty points for their team, added after the third session.

Icons Series dates

After the Icons Cup USA, held in New York in 2022 and won 21.5-11.5 by Team USA, the Icons Series returns in March 2025.
