Iconic Championship Golf Courses: Pinehurst No. 2

The host of the 2024 US Open, we look at one of the most iconic golf courses in the United States: Pinehurst No. 2.

Notoriously difficult - befitting of a US Open venue - Pinehurst No. 2 has played host to the 1936 PGA Championship, the 1951 Ryder Cup, the 1962 and 2019 US Amateur, the 1994 US Senior Open, the 2014 US Women's Open and the US Open in 1999, 2005, 2014 and 2024.

Pinehurst No. 2 course record

Martin Kaymer lapped the field with two rounds of 65 to start the 2014 US Open, but the course record at Pinehurst No. 2 is even better than that.

Gibby Gilbert, Tom Watson and Hale Irwin all shot 62s in the Hall of Fame Classic and World Open between 1973 and 1982, and share Pinehurst No. 2's course record.

How much does it cost to play Pinehurst No. 2?

In order to play Pinehurst No. 2, you need to be a member of the resort or a guest staying on the property for at least two nights. Rates vary depending on the time of year you're going, but golfers can opt to book the Premier Golf Package from $1,652 which includes a round at No. 2.

Cheaper packages are available from $272 per night, but a two-night minimum stay is required, with a $250 premium added to play No. 2, meaning the cheapest you can play No. 2 for is nearly $800, and that's before any caddie fees.

Where is Pinehurst No. 2?

Pinehurst No. 2 is located in North Carolina, around two hours east of Charlotte, an hour west of Fayetteville and an hour south-west of Raleigh.

How many golf courses are at Pinehurst?

As its name suggests, Pinehurst No. 2 isn't the only golf course at Pinehurst Resort. In fact, Pinehurst has a total of nine 18-hole golf courses and a nine-hole short course.

Pinehurst No. 2 designer

Famed golf course architect Donald Ross designed Pinehurst No. 2.

A sign on the course features a quote from Ross, which reads: "I sincerely believe this course to be the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed. It is obviously the function of the championship course to present competitors with a variety of problems that will test every type of shot which a golfer of championship ability should be qualified to play. Thus it should call for long and accurate tee shots, accurate iron play, precise handling of the short game, and finally, consistent putting."
