Hull City are reportedly considering a change of manager despite Ruben Selles preserving their Championship status in the 2024/25 season.
Selles began the campaign at Reading but joined Hull in early December after his predecessor Tim Walter was sacked following a run of nine games without a win which left the Tigers in the Championship relegation zone.
Hull were unable to pull clear of the bottom three in the subsequent months and upon entering the final day of the season in 22nd, the Humberside outfit secured a draw away at Portsmouth to remain in the division on goal difference.
"I'm very proud of the courage and the way the players managed the game on the pitch," Selles reflected following the draw at Fratton Park which guaranteed Hull's survival.
"Everyone in the club managed difficult moments and it has been a tough season for everyone and we deserved to stay in the division.
"We had a team that was rock bottom and to achieve the target this season with all the injuries and everything else is just massive.
Now it's over and we crossed the line, we can rest a little bit and I told the players that we will remember this day for years to come.
- Ruben Selles (Hull City Manager)
The Tigers' survival quest was aided by an emphatic victory from West Bromwich Albion, who defeated Luton Town 5-3 to condemn the Hatters to League One alongside Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle.
Despite Selles accomplishing his mission of keeping Hull in the second tier, a report from BBC Radio Humberside has suggested owner Acun Ilcaili is still considering removing the former Southampton tactician in favour of adding a new face to the MKM Stadium hotseat.
Ilicali, who purchased the club from the Allam family in January 2022, faced great criticism following his dismissal of Liam Rosenior at the end of the 2023/24 campaign as Hull narrowly missed out on a play-off berth.
Where Rosenior has gone on to achieve success with Strasbourg in Ligue 1, Hull were languishing in the Championship bottom six from November onwards and Ilicali is determined to steer the club back on a positive trajectory, whether that is with or without Selles.
Tony Mowbray is rumoured to be in the running for the Hull job if Selles does depart.
The former Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland boss made a fairytale return to West Brom at the start of 2025 but results soon deteriorated, resulting in the Baggies slipping out of play-off contention and ultimately costing Mowbray his job just three months into his second stint.
