Hull City 6/1 for Championship promotion with Tim Walter confirmed as new manager

Hull City are 6/1 to be promoted from the Championship in 2024/25 following the news that Tim Walter has become the club's new manager.

Championship Odds

The Tigers enjoyed their best season since being relegated from the Premier League back in 2017, narrowly missing out on the play-offs and recording their first top-half finish in England's second tier for the first time since 2016 when they last achieved promotion to the top flight.

Since their relegation in 2017, Hull have rarely come close to a return to the Premier League, finishing 18th, 13th and 24th in the Championship, winning League One at the first time of asking, then finishing 19th and 15th on their return, but there were shoots of recovery after appointing Liam Rosenior in November 2022.

Hull were much improved having been nervously looking over their shoulders in the first few months of the campaign; Shota Arveladze was sacked with the Tigers in 20th.

The dismissal of Rosenior seemed harsh, particularly when considering he was one of the three nominees for Championship Manager of the Season. Four loan signings were made in January with three coming at the end of the window with Hull's play-off push faltering with a run of six games without a win.

The 39-year-old is unlikely to be out of work for long - owner Acun Ilicali even acknowledged Rosenior is a talented coach, but merely parted ways over a difference of opinion regarding playing style - but it sent the Tigers into the unpredictable manager market.

German Walter is the answer for Ilicali, and if entertaining football is what the owner wanted, entertaining football is what he will get, with the high-risk 'Walter ball' set to be introduced to Humberside.

Walter has spent his entire managerial career in Germany, spending two full seasons with Hamburg, narrowly missing out on promotion both seasons, before being sacked halfway through the previous campaign.

With Ipswich, Southampton and Leicester all going up, and the three relegated sides not looking the strongest, there's a window for a number of teams to have a serious run at promotion, and Hull fans can be optimistic about their chances.
