Dating back to 1937, Norwegian football has operated with a variety of formats over the years, with the Eliteserien now representing the top level of football in the country.
Starting in 1937, Norwegian football was regionalised and it wasn't until 1963 that one traditional, nationwide league was introduced.
Unlike many European leagues, a play-off format is not used to decide the champions, with the champion decided by whoever tops the table after 30 games.
Relegation, however, is partly decided by play-offs, with the winner of the promotion play-off in the First Division facing the team finishing 14th in the Eliteserien over two legs.

The 2024 Eliteserien started on 31st March 2024 and will conclude on 1st December 2024.
The relegation play-offs are then contested on 5th and 8th December.
