14:15 York – Marine Wave @ 6/1

bet365 are offering an additional place on this sprint handicap, meaning there are five places on offer instead of four. It is also 6-1 the field at the time of writing, so playing each-way and getting a horse in the first five home is a guarantee of profit.

Marine Wave is among the market leaders, but she deserves to be and could be the type to climb higher than handicaps this year. She was a half-length third off this mark at the Ebor meeting last year. On her next run, in a Listed race at Ayr over five and a half furlongs, she hit the front briefly inside the last.

Speed is clearly her thing and she again shaped with promise at another speed track, Musselburgh, on her reappearance 25 days ago. Marine Wave was trapped wide, in a race which followed the Musselburgh script in that it was dominated by those who hugged the near rail. She did well to threaten at all, however briefly.

With that run behind her, and pace either side of her in stall nine here, Marine Wave can go close back at the scene of the best run of her career.

15:45 York - Economics @ 7/1

Dante favourite Ancient Wisdom is among the leading contenders for the Derby and would need to win this race to continue to justify that reputation. This is his seasonal reappearance, though, and his form as a juvenile was primarily on much softer ground including when he won the Kameko Futurity Stakes at Doncaster in October.

It may be worth a small play against him at big odds. Economics has a lot to find on form, but part of that is down to opportunity. He comes here straight from maidens. He has contested good races in that sphere, the first a backend event at Newmarket and last time he beat a field of blue-bloods at Newbury.

It was notable how well Economics picked up for pressure last time, especially given Tom Marquand was still mindful of his inexperience.

Stepping up to this distance will be no issue at all. His dam was effective at up to a mile and six furlongs, and Economics is a long strider who will likely suit York's flat and wide-open spaces. Backing him here is less taking a risk on his talent than latching onto him early, as he looks like a Group horse in the making.

16:15 York - Dark Vintage @ 16/1

Recent big-name winners of this race have included Profitable, Garrus and Winter Power. None of those horses went off favourite, which reminds punters that even though two-year-olds spend a lot of their time at sprint trips, the best older sprinters are rarely decided at two.

That is the worry for fans of Big Evs, who is odds on and deserves to be on juvenile form. He was very forward last year, he won at Royal Ascot, and he needs to show he has gone on this year and do so right away.

Preference is for Dark Vintage. He represents the trainer who won this race last year, in Richard Fahey, and looks to have been primed for this particular contest. He came to Fahey from America, although he has a European turf pedigree, and debuted for the yard in a hot handicap at Sandown. Dark Vintage shaped with promise, while looking like he would come on for the run.

A visor goes on now, and Dark Vintage is expected to step forward. Whether it will be enough to catch Big Evs remains to be seen, but the record of good horses in this race shows us that it is better to play to small stakes and find out, rather than follow juvenile form.
