The £70,000 Listed 6f Garrowby Stakes is the feature contest from seven races at York on Sunday afternoon, and Racing Post tipster Dave Randall offers his latest betting tips for the action.
13:40 York – Shah @ 5/6
16:00 York – Quinault @ 4/1
16:35 York – Lil Guff @ 10/1
13:40 York – Shah @ 5/6
For the first race on Sunday's card at York (13:40) nine juveniles are set to go to post for a novice contest over a mile, and Shah is considered one of the most likely winners of the whole day, representing George Boughey with Tom Marquand taking over in the saddle.
Marquand is 3-22 (14% +£10.17) when riding for the Newmarket handler, and the jockey is 12-49 (24%) in the past fortnight.
The Sea The Stars colt cost 100,000gns at the breeze-ups in April. He reached a really promising second behind Matauri Bay over 7f on his debut at Leicester in August and the winner was a possibly unlucky fast-finishing second in Sandown's Group 3 Solario Stakes last weekend.
Shah went on to run another promising race when second on this course over 7f in the Class 2 Convivial maiden at the recent Ebor meeting, overcoming a modest beginning and a troubled passage through to finish just over a length behind the favourite Angelo Buonarroti.
The step up to a mile should suit and he makes significant appeal.
16:00 York – Quinault @ 4/1
Twelve runners are set to go to post for York's Listed 6f Garrowby Stakes (16.00) on Sunday afternoon, and Quinault is considered a horse worth sticking with now that he has hit a winning groove again, representing Stuart Williams with Marco Ghiani continuing in the saddle.
Ghiani is 3-3 when riding the son of Oasis Dream, who is 7-10 over this 6f trip including over this course and distance.
The selection progressed through handicaps last year, remaining unbeaten with six consecutive victories between April and July.
Now that he has broken the Listed race code, winning in this grade at Chester and Newmarket last month on good to soft and soft ground, he is just the type to complete a hat-trick, particularly on this likely better ground.
The gelding is 6-13 on good or good to firm ground and he has a likeable running style for sprinting on a decent surface on this course, so expect him to make a bold bid from a prominent pitch throughout.
16:35 York – Lil Guff @ 10/1
Finally, there is a typically fascinating and competitive 22-runner Class 2 6f handicap towards the end of the York card (16:35) and Lil Guff makes plenty of each-way appeal, representing Daniel and Claire Kubler with Jim Crowley in the saddle.
The Kublers have a 71% Run-To-Form figure with their runners in the past fortnight and Crowley is 4-23 (17%) when riding for their yard.
Lil Guff ran to a Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 89 when reaching a close second over 5f on good ground at Sandown eight days ago, shaping like she is more than ready for this return to 6f, a trip over which she is 4-20.
The Twilight Son mare will be particularly competitive if reproducing that latest level of form from a mark of 81.
