York Horse Racing Tips for Saturday

The culmination of the four days of quality racing at York arrives on Saturday with the Ebor Handicap the highlight of the entire meeting, and the Racing Post's Robbie Wilder gives his best bets on the seven-race card.

17:20 York - Oviedo @
8/1

13:50 York - Enfjaar @ 4/1

It is a surprise to see Jim Crowley pledging his allegiances to Alyanaabi in the Strensall Stakes as Enfjaar arrives in better form. The top rider may be left to rue that choice.

Enfjaar clearly likes it on the Knavesmire as he landed the John Smith’s Cup in superb style two starts back and improved on that form when last seen at Glorious Goodwood.

The son of Lope De Vega was a hugely unfortunate runner-up off top weight in the handicap that opened that meeting, producing a rapid finishing speed when coming from much further back than the others who fought out the finish. He was undone by his track positioning and has the class to cut it at Group level now.

16:45 York - Tropical Storm @ 7/2

Unlike Enfjaar, Tropical Storm finished slowly at Glorious Goodwood in the Richmond Stakes. However, there was a big pace collapse there and the colt went off way too hard in front.

He deserves another chance back at the minimum trip in the Julia Graves Roses Stakes. On his previous outing, Tropical Storm produced a superb effort when second in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, edging out subsequent Group 1 winner Whistlejacket.

Trainer Andrew Balding, who has been among the winners at York this week, knows the family well as he trains Tropical Storm’s half-brother Purosangue, who finished second in this race last season before landing the Rockingham here last autumn.

The selection looks the type to take to York.

17:20 York - Oviedo @ 8/1

Connections of Oviedo might have expected their four-year-old to really kick on this season. That hasn’t yet transpired, but he merits a second look in the concluding 1m2f handicap.

He was second in this race last season off 1lb lower, only succumbing to subsequent Cambridgeshire scorer Astro King.

The assumption is he will be ready to fire after 71 days off as he clearly wasn’t right when last seen, while there was more promise on his previous start in the Huxley Stakes behind the top-class Passenger. That company proved too hot for Oviedo, who raced keenly and sat too close to a hot pace in a contest run in a course record time.

He could yet make up into a Group performer and the Ed Bethell yard’s horses have been running excellently at York this week.
