There shouldn’t be as much of a disparity between Golden Ace and Burdett Road in the early betting for the Kingwell Hurdle.

Burdett Road’s excellent effort in the Christmas Hurdle is clearly respectable form, but the feeling is we haven’t seen anywhere near the best of Golden Ace yet this term.

Jeremy Scott’s horses have struggled on the whole this season, but seem to be working their way back to form, and it’s easy to forgive Golden Ace’s two efforts over middle distances against the boys this term.

She hasn’t been seeing out her races after travelling strongly over 2m4f, failing to justify favouritism on both occasions, and the significant drop back in trip is a worthwhile move. A reproduction of her defeat of Brighterdaysahaead over 2m1f last March may be good enough.

Harry Derham is 3-13 with handicap chase debutants over the past year and Thunder N Lightnin can enhance that record in the 2m4f handicap chase.

Derham’s horses were set back in their training schedule during a key part of the season with his gallops flooded, but those issues have now been rectified and Thunder N Lightnin, who ran so well on his return from a few months off when third in a handicap hurdle at Musselburgh this month, can go two places better providing he can jump fences accurately.

The selection accrued some decent experience in point-to-points, so there is hope on that score, and he’s only had one go in a handicap. It can be argued that none of his opponents arrive in any sort of form and this looks a superb opportunity.

16:00 Wincanton - De Tellers Fortune @ 7/4

De Tellers Fortune made a bright start to his own chasing career when a cosier winner than the margin implied at Taunton in December, and he can double up in this sphere in the 3m1f handicap chase.

The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old was weak in the betting that day and conceding race fitness all around, so that was an encouraging first attempt at this discipline.

He looks the type to keep improving with experience and looks dangerously handicapped off just 6lb higher with the prospect of more to come over fences for a top yard.

There isn’t much to fear here (four of his six opponents were pulled up last time) and chief market rival Pedley Wood is far more exposed.
