It's a busy day of horse racing across Britain and Ireland on Wednesday, with a total of six meetings scheduled. There's a good mix of both Flat and jumps in the afternoon before the action concludes under the lights on the AW at Dundalk.
Racing Post tipster, Marcus Buckland, has provided three recommendations for the day’s action
13:25 Chepstow - St James's Finest @ 11/8
15:23 Nottingham - Mertoun @ 11/2
15:30 Kempton - Red Curry @ 13/2
13:25 Chepstow - St James's Finest @ 11/8
The Dan and Harry Skelton juggernaut continues at a tremendous pace and they have strong claims of another winner courtesy of hurdling debutant St James’s Finest at Chepstow.
This race was won 12 months ago by subsequent Grade 1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runner-up Sober Glory and appears to have attracted another strong field of 13, including the Paul Nicholls-trained Order On Time, who won a bumper at this track by a wide margin when last seen.
However, preference is for St James’s Finest who, having shaped with promise when fourth here on his debut, showed the benefit of that experience when winning a Class 2 event in tidy fashion at Windsor in January.
The runner-up, Ti’mamzel, was successful in Listed company at Sandown on her next start, so the form reads well and a translation of that to hurdles will likely make him hard to beat.
15:23 Nottingham - Mertoun @ 11/2
The Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Mertoun has been one of the standout improvers of the current Flat season, the three-year-old winning four times and going from 50 up to 78 in the ratings.
He ran to Racing Post Ratings of 81 and 84 when winning at Windsor and Kempton the last twice, which suggests he’s still ahead of the handicapper, and there’s reason to believe he can improve again for this stiff mile at Nottingham on soft ground - his rider Rossa Ryan implying that the son of Oasis Dream is unlikely to come into his own until tackling 1m2f down the line.
He’s 3-6 over this distance and his trainer has done well at Nottingham over the last five years, sending out six winners from her 32 runners and showing a level stakes profit of £14.25.
15:30 Kempton - Red Curry @ 13/2
Both divisions of this novice stakes at Kempton have attracted runners from powerful yards and they’re likely to throw up their share of future winners.
However, the John and Thady Gosden-trained Red Curry most fits the bill for this race, the daughter of Sea The Stars having shaped with significant encouragement when finishing a close-up fifth on her debut over course-and-distance last month, following a slow start.
She is half-sister to three useful winners, most notably The Euphrates, who won in Listed company over 1m4f and the valuable Irish Cesarewitch over 2m1f, prior to landing a Group 2 in Australia over 1m2f.
Red Curry should be sharper all round for that outing and James Doyle, who has an impressive 27% strike-rate at this track, has been booked to ride.
Marcus Buckland has enjoyed a significant amount of success in recent weeks, the highlight being 20/1 winner Chattering Classes. He also had a Lucky 15 up at Down Royal on Friday, Ash Hobbs the pick of those winners at 4/1.
