The latest horse racing betting tips for Tuesday’s jumps cards from Racing Post tipster Phill Anderson.
12:35 - Southwell - Smurfette @ 7/2
13:05 - Southwell - Goldwyn @ 10/1
14:30 - Sedgefield - Finisk River @ 9/1
12:35 - Southwell - Smurfette @ 7/2
Smurfette showed a fair bit of promise in both bumpers and novice hurdles for Dan Skelton before her £4,000 sale to Tom Ellis at the start of the season and this six-year-old mare has already started paying her new connections back, landing a handicap chase at Warwick sandwiched between two other placed efforts.
The latest run at Stratford is worth marking up given that she would have finished closer without a late mistake at a fence and she also had a fair bit on her plate from the rear of the field.
She’s given the impression that three miles plus will suit at times in her career and she arrives in better form than most of her rivals.
13:05 - Southwell - Goldwyn @ 10/1
Having shown ability when trained in Ireland, Goldwyn made a promising enough start to life in Britain, hitting the frame in two maiden hurdles before getting off the mark at Wetherby last season.
Her subsequent run at Hexham is worth forgiving when unable to recover from a mistake and she gives the impression that she could have more to give over the larger obstacles.
This is her chase debut but the booking of Charlie Deutsch is eye-catching given that it’s his only ride on the card and only outside ride so far this season. This points to the mare being fully tuned up for her chase debut/seasonal return.
14:30 - Sedgefield - Finisk River @ 9/1
A good conditional rider claiming 7lb can be a real asset, particularly in competitive handicap company and Charlie Maggs is absolutely flying right now with four winners from his last eight rides, running at a 22% strike-rate for 2024.
He gets the ride on board Finisk River, who is only 1lb above his last winning handicap mark and while he was a bit disappointing over this course and distance last time out, his previous form figures over course and distance read 211.
He’s the type to bounce straight back given his consistent profile and he’s done his fair share of winning with seven wins from 37 starts over timber, an excellent record in this sort of grade of race.
The son of Red Rocks still lurks 9lb below his highest winning mark (a win here two years ago) and with Maggs’ 7lb claim, he could be the value bet against the hat-trick seeking Laser Focus.
Laser Focus warrants respect given the form he and his yard are both in but there’s a fair chance he may get found out by a hefty rise in the weights.
