The July festival kicks off with the Bahrain Trophy and Saint George sets the form standard on Racing Post Ratings by virtue of his fine second to Gregory in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last time.
Saint George pulled nearly four lengths clear of the third and the form is well worth respecting, but he might not be suited by this slight drop back in trip and KLONDIKE makes more appeal at the prices for William Haggas.
His form also ties in with Gregory as he chased home the Queen’s Vase winner on just his second run in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood.
Gregory is the favourite for the St Leger off the back of his performance at the royal meeting, relishing a step up in trip there, and Klondike promises to be suited by an extra two furlongs too.
The Galileo colt is a half-brother to Queen’s Vase winner Kemari and has shown more at this early stage of his career than every other runner in the field, so can have a big say granted natural progression.

Purosangue looks a short enough price for Andrew Balding in the Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes that is next up at Newmarket.
While this son of Aclaim impressed when making all on his debut at Haydock in June, he was at an advantage racing by the stands’ side rail on a faster strip of ground, and the form has taken a couple of knocks since as the second and third for well beaten on their next outings.
Preference at a much bigger price is for CHIEF MANKATO for Charlie Hills, a trainer who excels with sprinters.
Chief Mankato’s debut RPR of 89 equalled that of Purosangue’s and the performance looks superior. The runner-up finished third in the Windsor Castle, while the third and fourth scored nicely since. Each of those runners raced prominently that day and Chief Mankato arrived from much further back, so we are surely dealing with a well-above average juvenile.
It is a concern he was withdrawn at Royal Ascot due to getting upset in the stalls, but he can go close if the occasion does not get the better of him.
Quinault, Washington Heights and MILL STREAM filled the first three places in an ultra-competitive 21-runner handicap at York last month and that is a key formline in the context of this race.
Given Mill Stream reopposes with the pair off 5lb and 4lb better terms and is less exposed than both, he looks the way to go over a course and distance he produced his best juvenile effort at.
Mill Stream gave the 111-rated Noble Style a right scare under a penalty in that novice, with the 98-rated Wallop receiving 6lb from both of them in third.
The selection gives the impression he is well able to take out a major sprint handicap off a mark of 99 on the fast ground he loves for Jane Chapple-Hyam.
