Horse racing tips: Sidi Ismael can spring a Devon National surprise

3.40 Exeter - Sidi Ismael @ 12/1

The Devon National Handicap Chase (3.20) is the feature on the day at Exeter and the one to back is SIDI ISMAEL, who has dropped to a good mark and shaped well at Plumpton last time.

The David Pipe-trained ten-year-old has dropped to the same mark as for his last success over fences in a 3m31/2f handicap chase at Market Rasen and is evidently well handicapped now.

He gave notice he could soon take advantage of his falling mark when fifth in the Sussex National at Plumpton last month. He traded at a low of 11 in running that day, having gone off 50-1, and briefly looked a threat on the turn for home before fading in the closing stages.

That was a step back in the right direction and he is 3lb lower, with Gearoid Harney taking over in the saddle claiming another 7lb. Sidi Ismael might just outclass these off top weight.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Sidi Ismael @ 12/1 - 1pt win

Horse Racing Betting Tips

4.10 Exeter - Farmer’s Gamble @ 15/2

The 2m7f handicap hurdle (4.10) at Exeter comes up straight after the big one and FARMER'S GAMBLE looks like an outstanding bet to record his second success over course and distance.

The eight-year-old is only 6lb higher than when scoring here last February and he caught the eye over fences on heavy ground at Uttoxeter last time. Farmer’s Gamble made most of the running that day in first-time cheekpieces and was still in front when falling at the third last.

The Dan Skelton-trained gelding returns to hurdles off the same mark here, with Tristan Durrell claiming 3lb off his back, and is now running from a rating from which he can win.

Provided Farmer’s Gamble jumps with fluency on his return to hurdling, he should go well.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Farmer’s Gamble @ 15/2 - 1pt win

8.30 Wolverhampton - Johnny Boom @ 6/1

The 1m11/2f handicap (8.30) brings down the curtain on the card at Wolverhampton on Friday night and JOHNNY BOOM appears to be peaking at the right time for this contest.

The Shaun Lycett-trained six-year-old twice ran well over hurdles in the winter, but looked well suited by returning to the all-weather when building on his run at Kempton last month with a close fourth over 1m4f at this course two weeks ago off his current BHA mark of 74.

Johnny Boom is only 2lb higher than for his last win at this track and he is a four-time scorer at Wolverhampton at trips ranging from 1m1/2f to 1m4f, including over course and distance.

The drop in trip evidently shouldn’t be an issue and Danny Tudhope is an eyecatching jockey booking. He rode Johnny Boom to his last win and is 2-2 when riding for the Lycett stable.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Johnny Boom @ 6/1 - 1pt win
