1.20 Newbury - Commodore @ 13/2

The 3m2f veterans’ handicap chase (1.20) kicks off the live action on ITV and it’s worth taking a chance on the 12-year-old, COMMODORE, on his return following a 343-day absence.

Venetia Williams-trained runners rarely lack fitness after time off the track and this grey has dropped to an attractive mark. He is now 5lb lower than when last successful at Cheltenham.

That was in December 2021 and it’s hard to know whether he retains his full capabilities given his advancing years, but the same can be said for several of these rivals and Commodore ran well on his last outing at this track, when beaten around 10 lengths in fifth.

His Cheltenham win came after a 309-day absence and he ran his best race last season first time out, so clearly goes well fresh. There is every chance this is the day when he will peak.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Commodore @ 13/2 - 1pt win

1.55 Newbury - Heltenham @ 8/1

HELTENHAM produced one of the most impressive performances of last season when running away with a course-and-distance handicap in March, completing a hat-trick, and he appears to have been trained with the Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase (1.55) as his big target.

He has steadily improved his Racing Post Ratings on his last three outings over fences and produced his best effort this season when a close second of six runners at Kempton last week.

Heltenham travelled strongly that day, but couldn’t get a clear run at the leaders in the home straight. He was switched to the outside too late and rattled home to lose out by half a length.

That wasn't a strong race, but Heltenham would almost certainly have won it with a clear run and the upside to him not getting his head in front is that he avoids a penalty for this contest.

He races off the same mark, back at one of his favourite tracks, and looks sure to go well.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

Heltenham @ 8/1 - 1pt win

2.25 Newbury - All Authorised @ SP

The 2m1/2f novice handicap hurdle (2.25) is a cracking race, featuring several promising young hurdlers, and the one to be on is ALL AUTHORISED, who is making his handicap debut.

The Gary Moore-trained five-year-old was a bumper winner at Fontwell on his debut in April last year and he has steadily progressed in three outings since being sent hurdling this season.

His jumping let him down on his first two starts in novice company, but he was better in that department at Sandown last time. The only mistake that day came at a crucial moment, just as the race was getting going at the second last, and he ran on well to finish in fourth of the five.

All Authorised might have beaten only one home, but he finished just a length and a quarter behind the winner and did some nice late work, shaping like he would be capable of better.

A mark of 110 isn’t too harsh and he should run well again if making the progress expected.

Graeme Rodway’s tip:

All Authorised @ SP - 1pt win
