Horse racing betting tips: Lone Star will take some stopping

The second day of Musselburgh’s bet365 Cheltenham Trials weekend has some great action and the Racing Post's Gary Savage thinks these could go well.

Gary Savage's tips

2.25 Musselburgh - Recoup @ 7/2
3.00 Musselburgh - Imaginary Dragon 12/1
4.05 Musselburgh - Lone Star 14/1

At early prices, Fergal O'Brien's lightly-raced five-year-old RECOUP looks good value to take this Scottish Supreme Novices' hurdle for last year's winning stable.

A classy performer in France in the colours of Khalid Abdullah, he produced Racing Post Ratings of 87, 88 and 89 over staying trips, signposting his potential in this sphere.

He did well to win on his only UK start to date in a big field at Ludlow in October, where he eventually got the better of Nicky Henderson's Choccabloc.

That gelding won next time before coming up short in the Grade 2 novice at Cheltenham last weekend, but his rating of 126 seems reasonable, and leaves Recoup with very little to find in today's company.

There's the obvious prospect of more to come, with quotes about him not being overraced this season after his win and this nice prospect can take this contest en route to better things.

3.00 Musselburgh - Imaginary Dragon @ 12/1

A fiendish Pertemps hurdle qualifier over three miles and, while it's jam-packed with Irish contenders and classy sorts with one eye on the Festival, it can pay to concentrate on those at the foot of the weights with no Cheltenham aspirations.

Perhaps it's no surprise that this race has been dominated by those carrying light weights and Sandy Thomson's IMAGINARY DRAGON can take advantage of receiving weight from almost all of his rivals.

He was hit with a 7lb rise after a very impressive front-running win at Kelso on only his second start for the stable, and sixth start overall, where the step up in trip brought about plenty of improvement.

He set his own pace and powered away from a couple of consistent sorts over 2m 6 1/2f that day, with today's extra distance looking likely to suit even more.

Musselburgh is a course that lends itself to front-running and with the likelihood of plenty to come, the six-year-old can see them all off.

Gary Savage's tip:

Imaginary Dragon @ 12/1 - 1pt each-way

4.05 Musselburgh - Lone Star @ 14/1

A cracking 2 1/2 mile handicap hurdle which is 4/1 the field and the likes of Duyfken and Lihyan, who fought out the finish of a C&D handicap earlier in the year, make plenty of appeal.

I would favour Duyfken of those two, and of all those that head the betting,  but I'm looking further down the list for a bet and Phil Kirby's former winning machine LONE STAR looks a bit of value.

From December 2022 to March 2023 the mare won five of her six starts, the first from a mark of 85, the last from 110, with the latter two coming over course and distance.

The most recent of those wins, from a mark 1lb lower than today, saw her cruise home by nine lengths in a class 2, a performance that would see her go very close in this contest.

She has run some indifferent races since then, including last time at Aintree when she was never in the race, but that came on atrocious ground which she doesn't enjoy at all.

Her best run this season was her only appearance at Musselburgh, where again on unsuitably soft ground, she nevertheless only faded late.

With another 3lb off her back since then, and with the ground drying out nicely, she can regain the winning thread.
