Racing Post tipster Keith Melrose returns to provide his best bets for Thursday’s racing action, with his selections coming from the meetings at Huntingdon and Doncaster.
14:20 Huntingdon - Telepathique @ 5/2
15:20 Doncaster - De Tellers Fortune @ 11/8
16:30 Doncaster - Getaway Drumlee @ 9/4
14:20 Huntingdon - Telepathique @ 5/2
While the Gavin Cromwell-trained Brides Hill has been something of a winning machine back home in Ireland, she has failed to give her running on a couple of starts in Britain. Most recently, she was turned over at odds of 2/5 at Doncaster in December.
With that niggle, the weights of this race and Telepathique's clear aptitude for whizzing around tight chase tracks in Britain, she is taken to upset the Irish challenger.
Telepathique has built up an admirable recent winning record herself. She has won three of her four starts over fences, and was second to a really impressive Dan Skelton-trained mare on the other occasion.
Last time, in a quite valuable handicap at Fakenham, Telepathique was giving 12lb and more to her rivals. She looked a class apart from them, making all and burning them off as she pleased.
Huntingdon is another tight track where front runners can get the opposition out of their comfort zone. Telepathique is expected to serve up a real test to Brides Hill, who must concede 6lb to her.
15:20 Doncaster - De Tellers Fortune @ 11/8
After taking a couple of starts to warm up for Nicky Henderson, De Tellers Fortune is rolling now and can continue his progressive path by winning the 3m novices' handicap chase at Doncaster.
These conditions are expected to be ideal for this horse. He is stoutly bred and won a point-to-point before he joined Henderson. His most recent run in December came after seven months off and was his chasing debut. It was also his first run over staying trips under rules.
Despite all those doubts, reflected in a price of 8/1 which would be bigger than expected for an expensive sort from the Henderson yard, he won well that day. It was a race at Taunton, which is a tight track with a short run-in. Even so, De Tellers Fortune was able to reel in Langley Hundred after jumping the last two lengths down.
That would be enough on its own to suggest he can overcome a 6lb rise in the weights. Throw in the subsequent win of the runner-up 18 days later over the same course and distance, as well as the more galloping nature of Doncaster compared with Taunton, and De Tellers Fortune becomes hard to resist.
16:30 Doncaster - Getaway Drumlee @ 9/4
There is not a huge amount of depth to the closing race at Doncaster. The only horses of much interest are Getaway Drumlee and Rath Gaul Hill. With the latter being a free-goer who is stepping up in trip on his first run since April, Getaway Drumlee is by far the more solid option.
Ben Pauling trains this unexposed chaser, who made a solid start at Huntingdon before running into the extremely well handicapped Hudson De Grugy at Fontwell 58 days ago.
All ground comes alike to Getaway Drumlee, who is also effective at this track having chased home talented stablemate Densworth here last March over hurdles. He has been left on the same mark as when he was second at Fontwell, and on top of that, he gets the assistance of Callum Pritchard for this race.
Pritchard has been one of the star conditional riders of the season, and the fact he can claim 5lb off his mounts is a serious edge. With all of that, and race-fitness over Rath Gaul Hill in his favour, Getaway Drumlee looks poised to get off the mark over fences at the third attempt.
