The Drifters Fish & Chips Handicap (5.05) at Yarmouth doesn't look like a strong race and it provides a good opportunity for GONE to get reward for a string of consistent performances.
The Charlie Johnston-trained three-year-old has finished second on three of her last four starts and her latest effort was her best in that sequence. She had to work hard to get to the front in that mile handicap at Bath and was picked off only late by a patiently ridden rival.
The front three pulled nicely clear that day and Gone is only 1lb higher in the weights in a similar type of contest. A reproduction of her Bath run may be good enough to win this time.
The selection is unproven with cut in the ground, so any rain would be a concern, but she handles good ground well enough and it is windy by the coast. That might dry the track out.
The Thistles And Thorns Florist Of Caister Handicap (5.40) comes up next and it's worth taking a chance on DARING GUEST, who can go well if he is in top form after a 386-day break.
Daring Guest might be nine-years-old, but he was in superb form when last seen and was impressive when running away with a 7f handicap on the all-weather at Lingfield last time.
That form would probably be good enough to win this and Daring Guest is equally effective on turf. He is also a course-and-distance winner, so has no issue coping with a straight track.
Daring Guest doesn't stand much racing and five of his last seven runs have come after breaks of at least 50 days. He therefore goes well fresh and will be hard fit for this return as he probably won't make it to the track too many more times without another long absence.
The Chelmsford City Racecourse Membership Now Available Handicap (7.00) is a cracking Class 2 contest and Ehraz might prove too good for these. He is fancied to defy top weight.
The four-year-old has consistently run well in better races this season and almost took advantage of a drop into this grade at York last time when beaten only three-quarters of a length in a strong 6f handicap. Ehraz stayed on well that day, looking in need of a stiffer test.
He was on the wrong side of the track, away from where the main action unfolded, and did remarkably well to finish third. A reproduction of that form would probably be good enough.
He has yet to prove he stays this 7f trip and the all-weather surface is also an unknown, but I'll be surprised if either of those concerns stop Ehraz from outclassing this weaker opposition.
